Political advocacy & media

The Political Advocacy Programme focuses on LGBTQI+ civil, political, and electoral participation, and is situated within the Research, Advocacy and Policy (RAP) Programme, which aims to:

  • Generate an accessible body of knowledge on LGBTQI+ issues through community-based research that informs activism and advocacy.
  • Engage in advocacy on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) human rights and socio-economic justice for LGBTQI+ people at local and national level to transform legislation, policies, systems and/or practices of various instate institutions, political bodies, civil society forums and other stakeholders.
  • Advance the civil, political, and electoral participation of LGBTQI+ people in local and national decision-making processes.

Our approach in the RAP Programme is informed by principles of justice, intersectionality, and participatory decision-making, with a focus on skills- and capacity-strengthening of LGBTQI+ community activists and organisations. Working within such a framework facilitates the creation of advocacy and knowledge that are owned and controlled by LGBTQI+ people and ultimately increases the depth and reach of community-led advocacy.
