The Thought Leaders Programme is to create and educate a new group of young Black LGBTQI+ in the LGBTQI+ space in South Africa and secondly to support their journey as pioneers and leaders within LGBTQI+ issues in government processes and civil society activities. Strengthening LGBTQI+ youth voices on community media and public platforms on LGBTQI+ lived realities, SOGIESC human rights and intersectional justice issues.
We have identified the need to have a strategic think tank to unpack the social and economic ills affecting young people , the vision is to identify black leaders who are experts in their own right. These thought leaders are innovative. They involve Black young LGBTQI+ persons who will work towards building political urgency in their schools and communities on issues that affect them as learners and post-school youth of SA.
The thought leadership digital activism project focused on the power in narratives, focusing on how power is situated in controlling narratives and how mainstream media shapes dominant narratives. We addressed the challenges created when heteronormative culture, homophobia and transphobia dominate mainstream narratives.
The programme is devoted to empowering young LGBTIQ+ to own their own imaginations and creative power to tell their own stories. Practical skills training included podcast production, digital activism, social media while taking account of the digital divide created by economic inequality, lack of access in rural areas, language and data.
The goal was to design and implement a toolkit for 15 LGBTIAQ+ leaders while using a variety of educational methodologies in online and physical formats, creating safe spaces that encouraged diverse and critical thinking, knowledge sharing and radical truth telling.
