South Africa remains one of the most unequal societies in the world, as black, working-class citizens remain in the margins of poverty, unemployment, quality and equal education, and access to basic services. Young people are the most affected by these inequalities, as they are at the forefront of accessing opportunities for self-sufficiency and independence. Navigating this context as young LGBTQI+ person proves to be even more challenging in a society that is entrenched with deep conservative beliefs and attitudes, creating an environment in which LGBTQI+ young people struggle to access their basic human rights.
To achieve this Triangle Project, through the “Creating Inclusive and Affirming Schools” (CIAS) Project, located within the Community Engagement and Empowerment Programme (CEEP) actively seeks through an intersectional feminist approach to create a society, especially in the education domain that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and where all individuals are able to access education and live their lives to their fullest potential.
Triangle Project recognises that the redress of these societal inequities should be grounded in the belief that LGBTQI+ youth leadership, advocacy and activism can drive systemic change by challenging discriminatory power structures and advocating for inclusive policies and practices. By empowering LGBTQI+ youth to take leadership roles in their communities, imagining and building their own collectives, organizations and movements, we can create a ripple effect of change that can lead to radical inclusion and restorative justice across society.
The CIAS Project dreams of education environment that seeks to radically imagine, nurture and create justice-centred solidarity communities LGBTQI+ learners, students, educators and key role players. Leaving a feminist footprint of resistance for future generations and a society free of homo-, trans- and intersex-phobia and other intersections of oppression. Therefore, the CIAS project supports schools and various educational institutions to build collective power and advocate for equal access to public schools and other state-provided centres of learning and education by:
Triangle Project proudly hosted the first-of-its-kind Learner Pride event in 2023, a remarkable celebration that successfully achieved its goals:
Embraced the mental health of LGBTQIA+ learners by acknowledging and celebrating their authentic selves.
Created inclusive spaces where LGBTQIA+ learners connected, fostering a genuine sense of belonging.
Provided unique opportunities for self-expression, empowering participants to boost their confidence authentically.
Committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ learners, ensuring engagement and academic success in their educational journey.
We are thrilled to have been a part of this historic event, championing the well-being and success of LGBTQIA+ learners in their academic environment!
